Everything looks useful when you don't know what you're looking for.

Have you ever gone to the grocery store without a list?

You come home with fancy cheese, three kinds of crackers, and a tiny jar of something that costs $14.

Dinner remains a mystery.

Branding can work the same way.

When you don't know what you're trying to build, everything looks useful.

A new logo.

A clever tagline.

Social media templates.

A website with things that move when you scroll.

Another font.

None of these things are necessarily bad. They just might not be what you need.

Without a plan, it's easy to collect things because they look good on their own. But a brand isn't a pile of good-looking ingredients.

It has to work together.

Before you start adding things, get clear about what you're trying to do.

Who are you trying to reach?

What do you want them to understand?

What do you need them to remember?

What would make them more likely to choose you?

Once you know what you need, the unnecessary stuff gets easier to avoid.

You can stop buying ingredients and start making dinner.
